Chapter Eight

The mid-morning sun scorched her arms as she stepped onto the quayside. A mariachi-style band - an influence from the nearby Mexican Riviera - was playing under a shady awning, their jaunty tunes conjuring up visions of exactly the kind of sight that greeted Isabelle’s eyes at this very moment: bright blue skies; lush green forest canopies climbing up the side of a mountain in the far distance; tiny white-washed houses crowded together as if they were clinging onto the cliffside so that they wouldn’t tumble down onto the precarious rocks that edged the shoreline; dark-haired, bright-eyed street children clamouring round, selling everything from figs to kettles. She inhaled deeply, the pungent, heady aromas of coconut, chilli and fish filling the air; as wonderful as the ship was, it was good to be back on dry land and to experience something so exotic and other-worldly as this.

Dodging the crowds heading out on the excursion buses that promised exciting trips showing all the island had to offer, Isabelle made her way to the head of a long line of taxis parked up on the right, under the shade of a line of palm trees. A grizzle-haired man with skin the colour of melted chocolate grinned at her, giving her the sparkling benefit of his two gold teeth, and took from her outstretched hand the scrap of paper upon which her Master had written an address.

“And don’t pay more than three dollars, including tip!” he had said to her merely minutes ago as she was packing her bag for the day ahead, having allowed her to dress modestly - a white bikini under a pale lilac sundress - and kissing her softly yet intently on the mouth. “Be careful. There are some very bad men out there!”

“Uh huh....,” she looked up at him, her eyes two dark, liquid pools of adoration. “You mean even more bad than the man right here? Somehow, I’m not so sure that’s even possible!”

He’d laughed and bit her neck gently, his gentleness utterly at odds with the vigour... no, the violence... with which he had buggered her.
